The extensive coastline of eastern Andalucia will surprise many visitors with its diversity and beauty. Much of it is a world away from the traditional image of the "Spanish Costa". The coast is easily accessed from Bedar being only approximately 15 minutes by car from some fantastic sweeps of blue flag beaches between Mojacar Playa to the south and Villaricos in the north. Maybe the most notable is the 6km long sandy beach which stretches away into the distance from the traditional fishing port of Garrucha with its busy marina and renowned fish restaurants.
The Cabo De Gata national park is a wonderful asset to the region with its pristine marine environment, sandy coves and rocky inlets.
The holiday visitor has much to choose from on the long and varied coastline of Almeria. The more traditional holiday beach scene at Mojacar, Garrucha, Puerto Rey or Villaricos is rarely busy even in the peak season and greatly benefits from the absence of high rise developments so prevalent elsewhere on the Mediterranean coast. To the south, diving, snorkelling, and sailing come to the fore where you can quite easily find your own private cove even in the summer months.
The Water Park
Only a few kilometres along the coast from the sunny resort of Mojacar playa you will find fun family days out at the Aqua Park Vera Playa. Situated close to the beach at Vera Playa the Aqua Park is easy to find and has ample parking. Open from the end of May until September it provides excellent entertainment for all the young at heart.
Well equipped and fully supervised by a qualified team, it includes 7 long twisting and varied rides. There is also a "wave pool" and enormous leisure swim pool, extensive children's area with small slides and rides to suit the little ones and various kiosks and cafes for eating. Ample sun shades and sun loungers are dotted throughout the property making for comfort in a relaxed environment, perfect for a family day out.
For an entertaining and fun filled day out - head for the hills. Two of Almerias great attractions side by side and both well worth a visit. Drive towards Tabernas and you are transported back in time to the Wild West as Indian Tee Pees and old abandoned towns appear on the horizon.
FORT BRAVO - This is one for the purists. If you are a Western film fan then this is the place for you. All the spaghetti westerns were filmed here and although it is less like a theme park all the town and reservations are the original film sets.
Visit the bar for a drink or snack and view the gallery of pictures which is a veritable who's who of film stars that filmed here. You can enjoy the restaurant, take horse rides, wander round the film sets and visit the Indian reservation. The can-can dancers entertain in the bar and the actors re enact scenes from the Wild West on horseback. There are some magnificent stunts and displays of horsemanship.
MINI HOLLYWOOD - The Wild West theme park with its own zoo comes highly recommended. Watch performances from the can-can girls in the saloon and the spectacular acrobatics from the bad guys being chased on horseback by the sheriff and his men.
You can wander round the transport museum, cactus gardens, old mine works and Wild West town - keep your eyes peeled for the odd John Wayne look alike. There are lovely picnic spots, a restaurant as well as gift shops and snack bars dotted round the park.
If it all gets too much head for the huge pool and laze for a couple of hours in the sun before heading to the zoo. A mini train takes you to the top of the park so all you have to do is wander back down taking in the sights. Don't miss the Parrot show which is the most popular item with the children.
Both parks are open daily in high season and holidays but check before travelling. (Within 1 hrs drive from Bedar. Head on E15/A7 towards Almeria and take the first Sorbas exit. Pass through Sorbas and just follow the Tabernas signs. Both parks are well signposted from the road.)
Walking / Hiking
Whether you are a casual walker or a serious hill climber this beautiful region offers a myriad of opportunities.
Explore the many tracks and paths in perfect solitude, the views incredible and the sunsets breathtaking. More adventurous excursions off the paths will be rewarded with caves, ruins, tunnels, wells, springs, old silver mines, ...... The list is almost endless.
On a summers day the forest offers many pleasant strolls through hot pines with their strong unmistakable aroma filling the air, occasionally being overwhelmed by the scent of wild herbs. In the clear blue sky the eagles and buzzards soaring gracefully above will more often than not be your only companions. The Milky Way meanders across the night sky, either side the constellations appearing to be laid on black velvet, a shooting star completing another night walk.
It is only when you combine all of these things with the incredible plant and wildlife that is so abundant that you realise that this a very magical place indeed. In addition to walking in the local area you can enjoy hundreds of kilometres of mountain biking, rock climbing (both free and bolted roots) and also caving.
The abundance of great golf courses and almost year round sunshine make this undiscovered area of Southern Andalucia a fantastic holiday destination. The bounty of golf courses in the area mean that even the most demanding of golfers will be satisfied. From spectacular courses running alongside the Mediterranean Sea to the unique desert course in the hills there is something for everyone here in Southern Andalucia.
For the more ambitious there is plenty of variety and quality to be found within easy reach. Desert Springs is a magnificent championship venue just half an hour away. The only true desert course to be found in Europe, its fairways narrow and often winding, its greens well protected and undulating, it is probably one of the finest golf courses in Spain. Even nearer is Valle Del Este, another fine venue and a great test of golf. Full of narrow driving holes and challenging carries, it definitely merits a visit.
With most courses offering buggy and club rental and often fantastic off peak deals the chance of a "sneaky" round of golf while on holiday may surprise you!
